Beware of heart attack in cold weather

Manisa Grandmedical Hospital Cardiology Specialist Dr. Bahadır Çöllü said that the risk of heart attack increases by 30 percent in winter months compared to other months. Stating that the contraction and narrowing of blood vessels in cold weather can cause stroke and clots in the lungs, especially heart attacks, Çöllü emphasized that care should be taken especially in sudden temperature drops.

Manisa Grandmedical Hospital Cardiology Specialist Dr. Bahadır Çöllü noted that those with heart disease should be careful in the winter months. Noting that there is shrinkage and narrowing in blood vessels with the effect of cold air, Çöllü said, "This narrowing causes some problems in the heart and vascular system. The heart has to work harder to pump oxygen-rich blood. The narrowing in the coronary arteries can cause chest pain. "Sudden worsening of symptoms in people increases the risk of hospitalization and even death. It increases the risk of heart attack, stroke and lung clots by increasing the tendency to clot in the blood. Those with heart disease should be careful in cold weather. Measures should be taken to reduce the risk," he said.

WINTER HEART ARISES INCREASES 30 PERCENT

Noting that the risk of heart attack is 30 percent higher in winter than in other months, Çöllü said, "In addition to low air temperatures, sudden fluctuations in air temperature and strong winds also increase the risk of heart attack. "It can increase the probability of having an attack by 1.6 percent. Diabetics, smokers, those with high blood pressure, inactive individuals and those who are overweight are more at risk of heart attack. Heavy physical activities, especially in the cold during the winter months, can cause sudden heart attack," he said.
