Brain and Nerve Surgery (Neurosurgery)

Brain and Nerve Surgery (Neurosurgery)

About the Branch

Brain, Spinal Cord and Nerve Surgery (Neurosurgery) is a surgical specialty that treats central and peripheral nervous system disorders through mechanical intervention. Medical doctors specializing in this branch are also called Neurosurgeons. After this specialization training, there are branches such as spinal, functional, tumor, vascular, pediatric neurosurgery as higher specialization branches. It can be considered as the specialty that requires the most attention and experience in medicine. This is in clinics; It requires working with high technology, scientific and an experienced team. Brain, Spinal Cord and Nerve Surgery, that is, Neurosurgery, is one of the dynamic and constantly developing fields of today's medicine. Grandmedical Hospital is rapidly advancing towards becoming one of the reference points of innovations and advanced technology in this field. Our hospital has advanced technical infrastructure and equipment to perform all brain, spinal cord and nerve surgeries, including specific brain surgeries.

Our neurosurgery department; works with the full coordination of all internal departments and intensive care units. In our hospital, our patients who apply for 24 hours, even under emergency conditions, can be intervened immediately and all Neurosurgery (Neurosurgery) surgeries can be performed.

Services provided in the Department of Brain, Spinal Cord and Nerve Surgery

Cerebrovascular Diseases

There is an endovascular, that is, interventional neuroradiology and surgery (microsurgical) working group for the treatment of cerebrovascular diseases. Treatment methods can be applied separately or together, depending on the patient's condition.

  • Cerebrovascular Aneurysms: It is a cerebrovascular disease that occurs in the form of bubbles in the brain vessels and can cause sudden worsening with bleeding and loss of life.
  • Arterio-Venous Malformation: It is a vascular disease prone to bleeding, in which arteries and veins are observed as a tangle in the brain.
  • Carotid Stenosis: It is the narrowing and occlusion of the parts of the jugular vein in the neck or brain. Stroke (paralysis) occurs with clot formation and treatment must be done within hours.
  • Brain Hemorrhages: It is the condition of blood leakage into the brain membranes or brain tissue.
  • Cerebrovascular Occlusion: It is the sudden interruption of the blood flow to the brain due to cerebrovascular occlusion. This picture is known as stroke or stroke and should be treated quickly. It is possible to open the occluded vessel by endovascular methods, to restore the blood supply to the brain with microsurgery, or to relieve the compressed brain tissue.

Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors

Surgical intervention is performed with microsurgery and endoscopic techniques in both adults and childhood brain and nerve tumors. Patients are evaluated by a council of neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and neuroradiologists. In some tumors, long-term chemotherapy (drug therapy) and/or radiotherapy (radiation therapy) is planned. Surgeries in skull base tumors, especially pituitary tumors, are performed with the participation of the ENT specialist in the surgical team.

Spinal Diseases

Spine; Surgical intervention is applied in traumatic diseases such as accidents and injuries, congenital diseases such as spinal canal narrowing and aging process, as well as congenital diseases. And also; Diseases such as lumbar and neck hernia are treated by neurosurgeons. In the "Minimally invasive spine center", where lumbar hernia, neck hernia and spine reinforcing (instrumentation) surgeries are performed with microsurgical and endoscopic surgical methods, rehabilitation services are also planned together with the physical therapy and rehabilitation department. Minimally invasive pain interventions, ie non-surgical interventional treatments for pain, are also carried out within this discipline.

Traumas (Brain or accidental brain injury)

Emergency interventions are applied to patients with head trauma without wasting time. Patients are treated together with the intensive care unit. In addition, they are simultaneously referred to physical therapy and rehabilitation programs. The aim is to eliminate the vital risk and to increase the quality of life. Rapid diagnosis, diagnosis and care of all kinds of trauma (head trauma, spinal trauma, etc.) that may develop due to various accidents can be performed by the brain, spinal cord and neurosurgery team working in coordination with the emergency service and intensive care unit for 24 hours.

Treatment of Functional Diseases

In diseases that reduce the quality of life such as Parkinson's and similar involuntary movement disorders, brain battery application is especially performed. Treatment of spasticity resulting from congenital causes or severe head trauma is performed with "selective dorsal rhizotomy" or "baclofen pump placement" surgeries. Epilepsy surgery operations are planned in cases of epilepsy, i.e. epilepsy, where drug therapy cannot be successful. The working group, which was formed with the participation of neurologists, psychiatrists and physical therapists, makes the necessary evaluations and decides whether surgical treatment is necessary or beneficial for all functional diseases.
