Obesity, which is a disease that enters our lives with an increasing rate in the world and in our country, unfortunately puts us in trouble not only physically but also metabolically by inviting many chronic diseases. Obesity is a multifactorial disease in which weight for height exceeds the desired level as a result of excessive increase in the ratio of body fat mass to lean mass due to the chronic imbalance between the amount of energy taken with food and energy expenditure. Obesity is a disease that must be treated. Today, the increase in the prevalence of obesity in Turkey and in many countries of the world has reached alarming proportions. In Turkey, the increase in the rate of obesity in adults in the last 10 years is 19% in men and 27% in women for mild obesity; For obesity, it reached 3% in men and 30% in women.

Total obesity rate in Turkey is around 26%. Such a widespread and increasing disease directly or indirectly affects most of the systems in our body negatively. Along with obesity, the risk of developing diseases such as heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, gall bladder diseases, some types of cancer, bone-joint disorders, respiratory disorders, menstrual irregularities and infertility increases.

  • hormonal factors
  • psychological problems

Detection of Obesity

Many methods are used in the diagnosis of obesity. Among these, the most practical and frequently used method is the formula we call Body Mass Index (BMI). According to this formula, to get an idea of your body weight, it is sufficient to divide your weight (kg) by your height in meters squared (m²) and look at which part you enter on the scale below.

BMI Weight (kg) / Height (m²)

BMI VALUES;

Less than 18.9 kg/m2 - WEAK

Between 19-24.9 kg/m2 - NORMAL

Between 25-29.9 kg/m2 - BULK (LIGHTWEIGHT)

Between 30-34.9 kg/m2 - FAT (OBESE) (RISKY FOR HEALTH!)

Those over 35 - OVERFAT (HIGH RISK FOR HEALTH)

Most of us have those little scales at home that make strange noises that we weigh ourselves from time to time. The more sensitive we are about our weight, the more often we climb on those scales. Every time we exit that plastic, which looks like a single line in the middle of the scale, many numbers pass and each passing number shows us the weights we are not. This last number is my weight when I got married, this last weight before my first birth, this last before I bought the car, this last before I enlisted in the military, and that white plastic line stops somewhere. If this number is high enough to make us feel the need to be weighed alone, the following sentences begin to be formed.

  • I see that I eat as much as anyone else, they are weak; but what i eat is good
  • I try to eat less; but then suddenly I can't stand it and attack the food, I can't help myself,
  • I don't really eat much, I don't look for food in the morning and at lunch; I even forget, but I get out of control at night,
  • I'm in front of the fridge when I have a full stomach,
  • I eat a lot when I'm angry.

For us, obesity is the victory of the side we cannot control. We blame ourselves profusely and feel incompetent, inadequate, and powerless in the face of food. Obesity is becoming more and more common in our society. Changes shaped by city culture in our social life are very important here. Weight loss diet treatments have also become a very popular topic with this increasing speed. With this popularity, it is observed that many unscientific false information misleads our society.
